An original watercolor of the classic Cosmopolitan cocktail.
While variations of a "Cosmopolitan" existed as far back as the early 1900s, the modern iteration was perfected in the late 1980s. It is largely credited to New York bartender Toby Cecchini, who reconstructed a San Francisco vodka-and-cranberry recipe by using high-quality citrus vodka, fresh lime, and Cointreau. The drink became an overnight cultural phenomenon in the 1990s and 2000s after being cemented as the signature drink of the characters on the hit HBO show Sex and the City.
The Classic Cosmo Recipe
A perfectly balanced Cosmopolitan relies on fresh, high-quality ingredients so the cranberry doesn't overpower the drink.
1.5 oz Citrus Vodka (like Absolut Citron or Grey Goose L'Orange)
1 oz Cointreau or Triple Sec
1 oz Cranberry Juice (sweetened cocktail juice, not tart 100% juice)
0.5 oz Fresh Lime Juice
Garnish: Lime wedge or wheel, or a lemon twist
How to make it:
Chill: Place your martini or coupe glass in the freezer for a few minutes to frost it.
Shake: Add all the liquid ingredients to a cocktail shaker, fill it with ice, and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds.
Strain: Strain the drink into your chilled glass.
Garnish: Express a lemon or lime peel over the top, or drop a lime wheel onto the surface.
